Simple August Afternoon

I have always believed that more often than not it’s the simple things in life that are the best.  At least that’s the philosophy that usually works for me.  Grueling day at work? Bad news from a friend?  Grilled cheese and tomato soup with a favorite movie or Brady Bunch rerun, for example, will comfort me like nothing else.

This afternoon I have been struck again by the beauty and rejuvenative powers that rest within life’s simplest things.  I feel grateful and at peace on my simple August afternoon here, thanks to the following:

A fresh pot of vegetarian chili simmers on the stove top

A gentle soft rain falls outside

Jerry Spinelli’s Stargirl and a pile of unread Rolling Stone magazines await me

I am going to watch The Ghost Writer for the second time in a week.  It’s a thriller directed by Roman Polanski, starring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan.  Besides being a great suspense story, the movie just looks good.  Lots of rain.  Lots of ocean.

Two Prime Suspect DVD’s have just arrived in their red Netflix envelopes.

Spoke with my sister, Emily, on the phone for over an hour.

Life is simple.  Life is good.
